Stumbling Your Own Sites – Do’s and Dont’s

in Social Networking

This is Part Four in our blog series on How to Use StumbleUpon to Grow Your Business. If you missed the last post, you can read it here.

As with any other social bookmarking site, StumbleUpon has rules and guidelines to consider. Though it’s a bit flexible, there are still some do’s and dont’s that are worth mentioning.

When you become a StumbleUpon user, you have the opportunity to stumble your own website. If your site hasn’t been stumbled before; you can add it to the database. You’ll be directed to a page where you can provide information about your site.

Here’s a quick rundown:

DON’T add a page to the database that won’t be appealing to another user. For example, don’t Stumble your “About” page or your contact page.

DO be sure the site you’re adding to the database contains interesting information and is eye catching and appealing to others. Sites that aren’t appealing will tank in the ratings and “thumbs down” ratings won’t help you one bit.

DON’T add a site when you’re in a hurry. Take your time to add the information correctly and accurately.

DO take your time when adding your own site. The information you provide the StumbleUpon database will include things like keyword tags that should be well thought out. A website about pet care may only get a handful of users who are interested in pet care. However, those who are interested in pets in general will still find your site with the proper keyword tags.

DON’T expect results right away. These things take time. ;)

DO be patient. Some Internet business owners see results right away, while others have to wait. The site will get more exposure if someone else stumbles across it and gives it a good review. How fast that can happen will depend on the site and how interesting the site’s topic is to other StumbleUpon users.

So go ahead and Stumble your own site, but you’ll get more mileage if there are more people who Stumble it for you ;)

Stay tuned for Part Five of this series tomorrow, when I’ll walk you through setting up your own StumbleUpon account.
