Every successful Internet marketer has a tool chest. No, it’s not filled with hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers. It’s stocked with carefully selected items that help analyze the competition, build search engine rankings and traffic, and aid in establishing a brand.
There are tons of great tools out there for Internet marketers. Some are free, and others cost money. Each has its own unique benefits, and the results we get from them are dependent on how we use them. Here are some tips for making the most of your Internet marketing tools.
- Before you do anything, make sure you have a clear picture of your target market. This is essential for any marketer, online or off. You could have the best products, glowing recommendations and stellar customer service, but if you’re marketing to the wrong people, they’re not going to bite.
- Keep your eyes open for cutting edge marketing tools. They’re popping up all the time. By being an early adopter, you can often get better results than you would if you waited until everyone else tries it.
- Don’t use a tool just because everyone else is. Think for yourself. Only you know what is best for your business. Some marketing tools work for some markets but not for others. It doesn’t hurt to give new things a try, but if they’re not a good fit with your mission, don’t waste your time.
- Use social networking wisely. It’s important, but don’t overdo it. Spending your entire day on Twitter eats up time that could be spent on activities that will directly make you money.
- Encourage site visitors to add you as a friend on social networking sites. Those who are active on them will do so if they like what you have to offer. Then you will have the opportunity to expose them to your products and business repeatedly, even if they did not join your mailing list.
- Monitor the results you’re getting from your marketing tools. Have your search engine rankings improved due to a change in strategy that you made because of one of these tools? Have customers found you through social networking sites? Make note of these things to determine whether you should continue with the tools you’re using.
- Keep your tools updated. Developers often add new and improved functionality to their software, but if you don’t upgrade, you won’t be able to take advantage of it.
Taking advantage of Internet marketing tools can be a big help in growing our businesses. By using them wisely, we can rise above the competition and build profitable relationships with our target markets. That means we can make more money.

Lisa,
You’ve got some good tips for the beginning online marketer here. I agree with the importance of keeping tabs on the freshest results from your marketing and SEO tools. I’d like to see some more specifics in this post though. What tools in particular do you think are overused? Where do you look for the latest and greatest SEO and marketing tools?
Have a nice day!

Hi Ben – I wouldn’t say that any tool in particular is overused, if used correctly. For example, it’s important to analyze your traffic stats, but if you’re checking your stats too much then productivity suffers. The same goes for social networking. Sure, it’s a great marketing tool, but if you’re spending your entire day on Twitter, I’d say that’s counter-productive. Make sense?
As far as finding the “latest and greatest”, my RSS feed is a great tool. I subscribe to industry news feeds, blog feeds, tech feeds, etc. I’ll hear about something new that way, then check it out for myself. I find, though, that the hottest new thing isn’t always the best. If you have something that works, and it’s not outdated, why change it? We can waste so much time and money trying to get the “next best thing”, when sometimes we already have exactly what we need.
Don’t disregard free tools, either. There’s some really great ones out there. I regularly use Google Webmaster Tools (including Google Analytics), Wordtracker’s free keyword tool, and Firefox add-ons such as the SEO Toolbar, among others.
Participating on forums is another great way to get information and recommendations on products and techniques. There’s some really great forums out there – just do a google search.
I hope that helps a bit – thanks for visiting!
